Supreme Court Decisions

News Type College News

This past week the Supreme Court handed down major decisions that changed the legal landscape, most notably removing the constitutional protection on a woman’s right to govern her body in the Dobbs decision while affirming the right of citizens to openly carry guns outside their homes in the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association decision

These decisions will have direct consequences for many citizens. Many of you will be moved to act.

In both instances, the debate will shift from the courts to the Congress and state legislatures.

The John Glenn College of Public Affairs believes civic engagement is critical for democracy to thrive. We encourage students, faculty, staff and all citizens to directly engage in the policy process and raise their voices about the issues that impact them.

The College stands ready as a resource in providing education and training in political campaigning and advocacy, civic engagement, and the policy making process.  This fall, we will devote one of our Dialogue sessions to the implications of the Dobbs decision, and will partner with other colleges, notably the Moritz College of Law, to provide information on these legal changes and the state of the policy debate nationally and here in Ohio.

While these court decisions are profound, they are not the final word on a women’s right to govern her body or the extent to which an American citizen can arm themselves.  The policy making process will continue through elections, legislating, and executive action.

Get involved to make a difference.
