Mary Ann Hoelzel

WAIP Fellow

What inspires you to work in public service?
I am motivated by my desire to help people and create civic engagement in my community. I also think public service is a great way to get involved in policy making, and get an introduction to legislation and it's impacts on citizens.

What is your major, and do you have any minors or specializations?
My major is Business Administration, my specialization is Economics, and my Minor is Spanish

What coursework or academic experiences have most shaped your interests in policy, leadership or public service?
The academic experience that has most shaped my interest in leadership is my Honors Leadership Program in the Fisher College of Business, because it is a cohort of hardworking students, who want to make a difference, all taking classes together. Also, the courses we take are based on developing our leadership skills and becoming better leaders.

What specific skills or experiences do you bring to your internship?
Some specific skills I bring to this internship are my business skills. In college, I have found many opportunities to develop my networking, communications, and interview skills, so I believe I am well equipped for the more business-y side of this program.

What strengths do you most rely on when collaborating with others?
Some strengths I rely on most when collaborating with others are empathy, task-orientedness, and interpersonal leadership.

What are your career goals and how do you hope this fellowship will support your professional journey?
I intend to get a Juris Doctorate, so I hope this fellowship will support my professional journey by giving me a deeper introduction into public policy, and how legislation affects individuals, so I can be more equipped to succeed in law school. I also hope that this fellowship develops my independence, adaptability, and professional skills.

What is your favorite or most impactful project from a previous role?
My favorite project was in a previous class that I took. My team and I provided external support to a Columbus non-profit, the Family, Adolescent, and Child Community Engagement Service (FACCES), where we helped develop their connections to other non-profits in the greater Columbus area, by providing them with contacts, resources, and helpful feedback for their database system. Through this project, we impacted the FACCES client base by increasing their access to free and discounted resources throughout Columbus, and by improving their ease of use in the FACCES database.
