What inspires you to work in public service?
My dedication to public service comes from the trailblazers before me that have worked tirelessly to ensure the rights of marginalized communities are protected. I have seen the beautiful achievements born out of public service through leaders like Ella Baker and John Lewis, and it inspires me to continue in their steps and commit to public servitude. But it it's not only our history that motivates me to work in public service; it's also the many individuals I've met during my time at OSU. Each student organizer, co-worker, mentee and Ohio representative I have had the chance to connect with over the past four years has fueled my desire to contribute back to the community that has helped shape the person I am today. Our history shows me the better, equitable future we can create through public service. But it is the individual stories and hopes for the future I hear in each individual I meet that pushes me to get personally involved in creating that change.
What is your major, and do you have any minors or specializations?
My major is Political Science and I have two minors in International Relations and Diplomacy, as well as History.
What coursework or academic experiences have most shaped your interests in policy, leadership or public service?
My courses in Political Analysis (POLITSC 4780 and 4781) have been instrumental in my understanding of how to use data and data analysis to understand the impact of policies on marginalized communities.
What specific skills or experiences do you bring to your internship?
My experiences working on campus as a Student Manager and an Academic Success Partner have prepared me to collaborate well with others, work well under pressure, and provide guidance to others when needed. Additionally, I have learned how to carry out administrative tasks and lead a team to address menstrual inequality in the DMV area with Project Pink Tax. I continued my advocacy work through Ohio Students Association where I was introduced to grassroots organizing and began to understand the inner workings of the Ohio State House.
What strengths do you most rely on when collaborating with others?
I believe collaboration hinges on two skills: listening and confidence. In order to collaborate well with others, you must be willing to listen to their feedback and input as well as the confidence to voice your opinions and provide feedback when necessary. When I work with others, I make sure to be open to their guidance as well as be willing to provide my thoughts to accomplish our common goal.
What are your career goals and how do you hope this fellowship will support your professional journey?
Following my graduation in May 2027, I plan on enrolling in pursing further education at law school and pursing a career in immigration law. Through WAIP, I hope to strengthen my understanding of legislative work and understand how to effectively serve my community through public service.
What is your favorite or most impactful project from a previous role?
In my current role as the Director of Marketing at Project Pink Tax, I created a month long campaign to advertise our 5k fundraiser event in October. Project Pink Tax works to educate the public on menstrual inequity and support those impacted by fundraising to donate menstrual products to shelters around DC. Through this campaign, I led our content creation team in advertising this event and we were able to secure 170 participants.
