Semra Kaleli

WAIP Fellow

What inspires you to work in public service?
What inspires me to work in public service is knowing that representation truly does make an impact. If I’m not at the table advocating for the issues and values I believe in, then I can’t expect change to happen. I believe that real progress comes from people being willing to step forward and use their voice. Representation challenges stereotypes, brings new perspectives into important conversations, and ensures that communities feel seen and heard in the places where decisions are being made.

What is your major, and do you have any minors or specializations?
Public Management, Leadership, and Policy with a minor in Women, Gender, and Public Policy

What coursework or academic experiences have most shaped your interests in policy, leadership or public service?
As a Public Management, Leadership, and Policy major at Ohio State, my coursework has strengthened my interest in ethical leadership and evidence-based policymaking through specific case work projects. An earlier youth leadership trip to DC where I got to see the House and Senate as well as some representatives and their internship coordinators when I attended also impacted me greatly.

What specific skills or experiences do you bring to your internship?
I bring strong communication and organization skills, and I’m someone who learns quickly and isn’t afraid to ask questions. Through school, advocacy programs, and my recent internship at the Statehouse, I’ve learned how to work well with others, stay organized, and take initiative when something needs to get done.

What strengths do you most rely on when collaborating with others?
I think one of my biggest strengths is being flexible and easy to work with. I listen to others, communicate openly, and always try to be someone my team can rely on. I enjoy hearing different perspectives and working together to find the best common solution.

What are your career goals and how do you hope this fellowship will support your professional journey?
I hope to build a career in public service whether that’s in the Hill or the FBI where I can make a real difference in people’s lives through policy. I’m excited to gain hands-on experience, learn from professionals, and continue growing as a leader through this internship.

What is your favorite or most impactful project from a previous role?
When I interned at the Ohio Statehouse, I worked on a constituent case that helped a sick patient get the care they needed after insurance complications were resolved through phone calls and phones I made.
