Meet Lauren Stephens

Bachelor of Arts in Public Management, Policy and Leadership Student

My passion for public service began when I represented and led others as class president in high school. I initially ran because I wanted to unite my grade through social events and collaboration with our administration. This experience allowed me to discover my interest in leadership, civic engagement, and ultimately public service. Going into college, I knew that I eventually wanted to enter the legal field, but I also knew there were many different paths I could take to get there. As someone who likes knowing a little bit about everything, studying public policy allows me to explore many topics while honing in on ones that have a big impact.

Pursuing a public policy degree allows me to better understand the systems, issues, and the communities that the law impacts while giving me the flexibility to explore different career paths.

When I was researching colleges I knew I wanted to major in public policy, but I did not truly understand what pursuing that degree entailed. When I came across the John Glenn College, my eyes were opened to an extensive range of opportunities and career paths I had never considered. It also ignited my desire to find a career path that intertwines my passion for law, policy, and foreign affairs.

The Glenn College, as well as its students and professors, have encouraged me to pursue experiential learning. In one particular course, Introduction to Public Policy, Professor Jos Raadschelders continuously pushed the idea that it is never too early to get involved in the public sector. This mindset transformed me from a hesitant freshman to an emerging leader, actively searching for my next opportunity. This mindset shift ultimately helped me secure an internship through the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation working for Congresswoman Emilia Sykes in the U.S. House of Representatives.

My Capitol Hill experience reinforced my passion for public service and strengthened my desire to explore the intersection of law, policy, and communities abroad.

The Glenn College has not only enabled me to educate myself in a variety of important subjects, but it has inspired me to pursue a career in law and policy, where I can make positive contributions to my community.
