The Ohio State University has announced that Dr. Trevor Brown will serve as the new director of the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. Brown currently is the Glenn School’s interim director and an associate professor at the school.
"I’m thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to serve the Glenn School and the University,” said Brown. “The school’s faculty, staff, students and alums have accomplished a lot in a short time. I’m looking forward to continuing the school’s upward trajectory.”
In announcing the appointment, Ohio State Provost Joseph Steinmetz said "the Glenn School will continue making great strides under Trevor’s leadership.”
"Trevor is an excellent choice to be the school’s director. It’s a choice that looks to a bright and innovative future for the Glenn School," said Sen. John Glenn, chairman of the Glenn School’s Board of Advisors. "There will be many great days ahead for the school and we look forward to working with Trevor to make them happen.”
Named for Sen. Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth and four-term senator from Ohio, the Glenn School offers a Bachelor of Arts in Public Affairs major that is one of fastest growing degrees among Ohio State undergraduates. Its graduate programs are ranked among the country’s top 10 percent. The school’s growing; interdisciplinary faculty develops research and technical assistance that are sought after by state and local agencies, as well as by public and nonprofit organizations.
Brown, who has four times been named the Glenn School’s Outstanding Teacher of the Year, received his Ph.D. in Public Policy and Political Science from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the Department of Political Science at Indiana University He earned his B.A. in Public Policy from Stanford University.
He came to Ohio State in 2001 as an assistant professor in the School of Policy and Management, and was part of the original faculty when the merger of the School of Policy and Management and the John Glenn Institute formed the John Glenn School of Public Affairs in 2006.
Before serving as interim director, Brown was the associate director of Academic Affairs and Research at the Glenn School. He has also held the position of Pasqual Maragall Chair Visiting Professor at the University of Barcelona’s Department of Economic Policy and a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Indiana University. He has served as the U.S. project manager for the Parliamentary Development Project, a U.S. Agency for International Development funded organization that provides technical assistance to the Ukrainian parliament.
Among his professional service contributions, he currently serves on the editorial board of Public Administration Review and of Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory. At the university level, his service includes the Division of Social Sciences Public Policy Minor Oversight Committee, since 2007, as well as the Center for Slavic and East European Studies Advisory Board, since 2009.
His research focuses on public management and organizational theory, contracting and contract management and strategic management and performance measurement. In 2013, he co-authored the book “Complex Contracting: Government Purchasing in the Wake of the US Coast Guard's Deepwater Program” that was published by Cambridge University Press.
He is married to Elizabeth Haydel, an education consultant. They have two daughters, Chloe, 13, and Kate, 10.
