Abstract

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, ISSI 2023 brought scientists, research managers, authorities and information professionals back together in person to engage in an open and proactive debate of the current status and advancements of informetric and scientometric theories and their deployment. Two hundred and ten scholars from 30 countries attended the conference. About one third of the conference participants had not previously attended an ISSI conference—and many of them were young scholars.

ISSI 2023 featured 128 oral presentations organized into major themes such as indicators, bibliometric analysis, funding and policy, content analysis, collaboration networks, mobility and career, maps and macro-analysis, open science and science communication, current events, and equity. The poster session featured 57 papers. For the first time, all original papers and posters presented at ISSI were published freely online with DOIs via Zenodo, both individually and as a three volume set, https://zenodo.org/communities/issi-2023 demonstrating a commitment to open scholarship. The Conference Proceedings, Volume 1 contains papers presented as full research papers. Volume 2 features papers presented as research-in-progress works. Volume 3 contains work presented as posters during the conference.

This Special Issue contains 30 extended papers of the contributions to the conference. Their contact authors come from thirteen different countries: China (7 authors), Spain (5 authors), France (4 authors), Germany (3 authors), Japan (2 authors), Canada (2 authors), and the United States, India, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, United Kingdom and Finland (1 author each). Taking into account the geographical location of all the authors would make the group of contributors even more diverse.
